⁶¹  Baybayin or alibata is a pre-Spanish Philippine writings that originated from the Javanese script Old Kawi. The writing system is a member of the Brahmic family (and an offshoot of the Vatteluttu alphabet) and is believed to have been in use as early as the 14^th century. The early Filipinos already knew how to write and perhaps have compiled some of their writings prior to Spanish colonization. There were also recorded accounts of trade between Philippines and China prior to that period. It is conclusive that the early inhabitants used this knowledge of writing in preserving some important information relating to trade, customs and traditions.
